Runner-up and the rest: iScreen HD, Kemo, Beast and iScreen's framerate problem

Our runner-up was iScreen HD, and the gap is wide enough that we hesitated to name one at all. iScreen HD's cold starts were competitive — 3.6 seconds median on Apple TV 4K — and its channel organisation is good. The problem is framerate discipline. On 14 of 40 sampled games, the active rendition reported 1080p at 25fps, which produced exactly the pan judder described earlier. Kemo IPTV was the most stable service we tested and one of the least impressive for hockey. Only 4 stalls across 40 games, which is genuinely good, but the sports feeds we sampled sat between 4.1 and 5.8 Mbps at 1080p, and that is not enough bits for this sport. The puck disappeared against the ice in our slap-pass test on 6 of 10 attempts. Beast IPTV gave us the most inconsistent results of the group. OTT Navigator is the power user's option and the best choice if you want to force decoder behaviour. Its per-channel settings let us pin hardware decoding and disable any framerate conversion, which is precisely how we verified the 25fps problem on iScreen HD. It is less polished than TiviMate and its settings tree will lose casual users, but for diagnosing a bad feed nothing else comes close.

IPTV Smarters is the one most providers bundle and the one we would recommend least for this sport. Channel switching averaged 4.8 seconds, its EPG rendering was the slowest of the three, and on two devices it introduced a visible frame-pacing wobble on 59.94fps content that neither other player showed on the same stream. It is also the most expensive box and the most restrictive about which players you can install. The Samsung Tizen TV was the slowest performer — 5.6 second median cold starts — and the most convenient, since it needs no extra hardware. LG's webOS sets behave similarly in our experience. Smart TV IPTV apps on both platforms tend to lag their Android counterparts by a year or more in features.

The generic Android TV box was the wildcard: excellent when it worked, and running a vendor Android build that will never see another security update. What our video measurements actually showed

Stall behaviour told a second story. Total stalls over 400ms across 40 games: iptvtheone 11, iScreen HD 19, Kemo 4, Beast 47. Median stall duration: 1.2s, 2.1s, 0.9s and 3.8s respectively. A 3.8-second median stall is the difference between seeing a goal and seeing a replay of a goal, and Beast produced 23 of its 47 stalls inside a single fortnight.

On latency, all four providers ran further behind live than the legitimate services, which is inherent to a restream: the feed is received, re-encoded and redistributed, and each hop adds buffer. We measured 38 to 74 seconds behind the arena clock for the IPTV group versus 22 to 31 seconds for the out-of-market app. If you follow a game in a group chat, assume you are last to know. Sportsnet, Rogers and the Canadian picture

Rogers' twelve-year national deal from 2026–27 keeps Sportsnet at the centre of national coverage, Hockey Night in Canada continues on Saturdays, and regional rights for the seven Canadian clubs remain split across Sportsnet, TSN and Bell Media properties.

The practical annoyance for Canadian fans is not availability but stacking: following one team can require Sportsnet plus a regional service plus, on Mondays, a Prime Video subscription. On quality, the Canadian-sourced feeds we sampled through IPTV were slightly better than the US national ones — 94.1% at 1080p50/60 with a mean of 9.9 Mbps — probably because the upstream broadcast is itself a higher-bitrate 1080i signal. 1080i deinterlacing quality then becomes the variable, and it is where cheap encoders show combing artefacts on fast pans. Playoff stress test: what breaks in April

Regular-season performance is not a prediction of playoff performance, because the load pattern is different. During a normal Tuesday there might be eight games spread over four hours; during the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs there are four games in one evening with dramatically more concurrent viewers per channel, and overtime pushes everything past its scheduled slot.

Kemo held its resolution but its already-thin bitrate dropped to a measured 3.8 Mbps at one point, at which the puck was simply not reliably visible. Beast was unusable for two of the four games we tried on one night. iScreen HD held together but produced its worst framerate results of the test, with 25fps renditions on 6 of 8 sampled games.

Overtime also exposed the EPG problem in the ugliest way. Guide-based recording on TiviMate stops at the scheduled end time, so a recording set for a 7pm game ends at 9:30 and misses the overtime winner. Every provider we tested has this flaw because it is a data problem, not a player problem. The workaround is a manual padding of 90 minutes on playoff recordings, which we now do by default. Reliability, support and what happens when you ask for a refund

We opened five support tickets per provider from a normal customer account: one technical question with an obvious answer, one technical question requiring escalation, one billing question, one refund request, and one deliberately vague "it doesn't work" report.
