Why "cheapest" is almost always the wrong question
Price per month is the number people compare because it is the number printed largest. It is also the number that tells you least. Consider what you are actually buying: a licence (or, in the grey-market case, an unlicensed retransmission) of a set of live unicast or multicast video streams, delivered over somebody's content delivery network, decoded by an app on your box. The second is how many of the streams work. There is a broader context worth stating. Pew Research Center has tracked the collapse of traditional cable television subscription in the United States across successive surveys, and the pattern is consistent: households leave cable primarily over price, then discover that reassembling their old channel lineup from streaming services costs about the same. How we tested: the 90-day rig, in full
Our 90-day testing rig used five devices: an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, an Apple TV 4K (third generation), a Samsung QN85B running Tizen, an Nvidia Shield TV Pro on Android TV, and a Windows 11 laptop for browser and desktop-player checks. Connection: 1 Gbps symmetric fibre from a single ISP, with three devices on wired gigabit Ethernet and two on Wi-Fi 6 at roughly four metres from the access point. Each provider ran for 90 days continuous. No provider knew it was being tested, and every account was bought at retail with our own money — we did not accept press accounts, because a press account gets provisioned on a healthier node than yours will be.
The measurement loop was automated where it could be and manual where it had to be. Four times a day — 08:00, 13:00, 20:00, and 23:30 local, chosen to straddle the evening congestion peak that Cloudflare's public internet-traffic reporting shows across most residential networks — a script walked a fixed random sample of 600 channels per provider, recorded time-to-first-frame, sampled bitrate at 30-second intervals for the first three minutes, and logged every stall event longer than 400 milliseconds. Manual passes covered the things a script cannot judge: whether the EPG entry matched what was actually on screen, whether audio and video drifted out of sync, and whether a "4K" channel was genuinely 2160p or an upscaled 1080p feed with a 4K label. Across all 14 providers we logged roughly 2,050 hours of playback and 8,400 individual channel checks.
Two definitions matter for reading the tables below. Buffering ratio is stalled seconds divided by total playback seconds, the standard quality-of-experience measure used throughout the delivery industry and formalised in various IEEE multimedia-QoE literature. Verified rate is the share of our 600-channel sample that cleared the ten-second load, thirty-minute play, 85-of-90-days bar. We then estimate a provider's verified library as its advertised count multiplied by its verified rate. That extrapolation is imperfect — our sample is random within the lineup, not stratified by popularity — and we flag it every time we use it. One thing we did not do: test on a congested connection. Everything here was measured with a gigabit line and no competing traffic, which is the best case. If your household runs two 4K streams and a video call at the same time on a 100 Mbps connection, add latency to every figure below. The cost-per-channel formula, and its honest limits
Here is the calculation, spelled out so you can redo it for any service we did not cover. Take the monthly price on the plan you would realistically buy — for annual plans, that means the annual figure divided by twelve, not the "regular price" the provider crossed out. Multiply the advertised channel count by our measured verified rate to get verified channels. Divide price by verified channels, then multiply by 1,000. That gives cost per 1,000 verified channels per month.
For iptvtheone.com, the numbers are concrete. The annual plan works out to $5.83/mo. The advertised lineup is roughly 20,000 channels. Our 600-channel sample verified 511, a rate of 85.2%, which extrapolates to about 17,040 verified channels. That is $5.83 ÷ 17,040 × 1,000 = $0.34 per 1,000 verified channels per month. Rounded the other way: about a third of a cent buys you three working channels for a month.
Now the honest limits, because this metric flatters grey-market IPTV in a way that deserves a warning label. First, channel count is subject to enormous duplication. We found the same regional sports feed appearing under eleven different names in one lineup, and our verified-rate sampling counts each of those eleven as a separate working channel. Read that table twice, because it contains two opposite lessons. On cost per working channel, the four IPTV services obliterate the licensed field and it is not close. On reliability per channel, the licensed field obliterates the IPTV services just as thoroughly — a 100% verified rate against 67–85%, and buffering ratios an order of magnitude lower. YouTube TV posted the fastest tune-in of anything we tested at a 1.9-second median, and a buffering ratio of 0.04% is effectively zero. We did not expect the cheapest service in the IPTV group to also be the most stable one, and we spent two weeks trying to find the catch. The stability held. Across 90 days, iptvtheone.com logged six outages affecting more than 10% of our sample simultaneously; the longest ran 41 minutes on a Saturday evening in July, and the shortest was under four minutes. Nightly uptime across the 20:00 and 23:30 checks — the ones that matter — came out at 99.1%. That figure is not licensed-bundle territory, but it is roughly four times better than the worst performer here.
Cold start broke down as 2.4 seconds median on Apple TV 4K, 3.1 on the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, 3.3 on the Nvidia Shield, 4.8 on Samsung Tizen, and 3.0 in a desktop browser. The Tizen penalty is real and consistent, and it is not the service's fault so much as a limitation of what Samsung's platform lets a third-party player do with HLS segment prefetching. Picture quality on the flagship English-language sports and entertainment channels sat at a stable 1080p at roughly 6–8 Mbps in H.264, with a smaller set of genuinely 2160p HEVC feeds that we confirmed by frame inspection rather than by trusting the channel name.
The weaknesses are worth as much of your attention as the strengths. EPG accuracy came in at 91.4%, meaning that roughly one in twelve times you check what is on, the guide lies to you — usually by being 15 to 40 minutes stale on live sport, which is precisely when you need it to be right. Channel naming is chaotic, with the duplication problem we described earlier in full effect. And the annual plan means paying twelve months up front to a business whose corporate footprint you cannot easily verify, which is a genuine risk you are accepting for the price. Practically: buy the annual plan if you buy at all, because the monthly rate erases most of the cost advantage that put this service at the top of the table. Pay with a method that gives you a chargeback path. Do not pay in cryptocurrency, however large the discount, because you are trading your only recourse for about eight percent. And check the channel list against the six or seven channels you actually care about before you commit — the aggregate numbers in this article will not save you if your one must-have feed is among the 14.8% that failed.
iScreen HD and Kemo IPTV: the competent middle
iScreen HD finished second on cost efficiency and second on nearly everything else, which makes it the obvious pick if our top choice is unavailable in your market or you simply do not want to prepay a year. Its 78% verified rate is a meaningful step down — 132 dead channels in our 600-channel sample versus 89 — and the 3.9-second median cold start is noticeable in ordinary use, particularly when channel-surfing, where each hop costs you most of four seconds. Buffering ratio of 1.10% works out to roughly 40 seconds of stall in an hour of viewing. Tolerable for a film, aggravating during a match.
What iScreen HD does better than our pick is the guide. EPG accuracy measured 84% overall, which is worse than iptvtheone's 91.4% in aggregate, but the failures were distributed differently: iScreen's guide was more often wrong about filler programming and more often right about live sport, which is the reverse of what we saw from our top pick and arguably the more useful trade. Its channel naming is also cleaner, with far less of the eleven-names-one-feed problem, so its 78% represents more genuinely distinct content than the raw number suggests.
Kemo IPTV is where the field starts to fray. A 73.5% verified rate, 4.6-second median cold start, and 1.9% buffering ratio put it in the "works, mostly, if you are patient" category. We also hit two administrative problems during the 90 days that never occurred with the top two: a renewal that silently failed and left the line dead for eleven hours, and a support ticket that took three days for a first reply. Those are not measurable in the same way as buffering, but they are the difference between a service and a hobby. Community threads on the r/IPTV subreddit and scattered Trustpilot reviews describe the same pattern of variable support quality across this tier, and while we treat user-generated reviews in this category with heavy scepticism — the astroturfing is blatant and constant — the volume and consistency of the complaint is a signal.

Beast IPTV and the reliability tax
We measured 7-second buffering on cold start with Beast IPTV on the Fire TV Stick 4K Max with a cleared app cache, and that number was not an outlier — it was the median across the whole run on that device. On Apple TV it improved to 5.4 seconds, on Tizen it degraded to 9.1. A 3.8% buffering ratio means roughly two minutes and eighteen seconds of stall per hour of viewing, distributed unpredictably. Fourteen separate outages hit more than 10% of our sample at once, and two of them exceeded three hours.
The 67% verified rate is the headline failure: one in three channels in our sample did not clear a bar that we would characterise as generous. And yet on paper, this service still shows a cost index of roughly 3.1× our pick — meaning that on the naive cost-per-channel calculation, it remains vastly cheaper per working channel than any licensed bundle. This is the clearest illustration in the whole dataset of why cost per channel, used alone, is a broken metric. Nobody should buy this service, and the arithmetic that says it is a bargain is the arithmetic's problem.
Here is the way we would put the reliability tax. Suppose you watch two hours of live television a night, 30 nights a month. At Beast's 3.8% buffering ratio you spend about 137 minutes a month staring at a spinner. At our top pick's 0.42% you spend about 15 minutes. If you value your own evening at even a nominal rate, that 122-minute difference costs more than the entire annual price gap between the two services. The Nielsen total-audience reports put average US daily video consumption well above the two-hour figure we used, which makes the gap larger for most households, not smaller.
There is a secondary cost that is harder to quantify and probably larger. Every stall is an opportunity to give up, and giving up on live television means either paying for something else or not watching. Services in this tier bleed subscribers for exactly this reason, and a high churn rate is itself a warning sign about a business you are about to prepay.
The app matters more than the price: TiviMate, OTT Navigator, IPTV Smarters
An IPTV subscription is a playlist and a set of credentials. The software that renders it is a separate decision, and it has a larger effect on your day-to-day experience than the difference between the top three services in our table. We tested all four IPTV subscriptions through three players on every compatible device.
TiviMate is the best of them and it is not a close contest. Its guide rendering is fast, its recording and catch-up handling is coherent, and its channel-group management is the only one that makes a 17,000-channel lineup navigable — you build a curated list of 40 channels once and never see the other 16,960 again. Crucially for the numbers in this article, TiviMate's aggressive prefetching cut our measured cold-start times by 0.6 to 1.1 seconds versus the same subscription played through a stock player. That is a bigger improvement than moving from Kemo to our top pick. TiviMate is Android-only, available through Google Play, which means Fire TV, Android TV, and Android boxes are in and Apple TV and Tizen are out.
OTT Navigator is the power user's choice and the most configurable player we tested — it exposes buffer sizes, decoder selection, and per-channel overrides that let you paper over a flaky provider. It is also the one most likely to be set up wrong by someone who does not know what a decoder is, and a badly configured OTT Navigator performed worse than a stock player in our runs. IPTV Smarters is what most providers hand you, it runs on nearly everything including Tizen, and it is mediocre in every dimension. Guide loading is slow, the interface is dated, and we measured the longest cold starts of the three players across all four subscriptions. Its virtue is availability. Hidden costs nobody puts on the pricing page
The advertised price is the floor, not the total. Six line items showed up repeatedly across our 90 days, and together they can add fifty percent or more to what you thought you were paying.
Extra connections. Almost every IPTV plan is priced for one simultaneous stream. Households average considerably more than one television, and a second connection is typically an upcharge rather than an inclusion. Two of the four services here throttled or dropped the first session when a second device connected, which is a worse outcome than a clean refusal because you cannot tell what went wrong.
The device. A Fire TV Stick 4K Max from Amazon, an Apple TV 4K, or an Android box is a real capital cost amortised over your subscription. If a $5.83/mo service requires a $60 stick you do not own, your first-year cost is nearly double the sticker.
The player licence. TiviMate's useful features sit behind a paid tier. Small, recurring, and never mentioned by the provider that told you to install it.
The VPN. Some providers work fine without one; others are blocked by ISPs in certain markets, and a VPN becomes mandatory rather than optional. That is a second subscription, and a VPN also cost us measurable performance — routing through a distant exit node added 0.8 to 2.4 seconds to cold start in our tests, and increased jitter noticeably.
Renewal pricing. Introductory rates that step up at renewal are standard practice across the whole streaming industry, not just this corner of it. Set a calendar reminder for eleven months out.
The dead-service premium. If you prepay a year and the service disappears in month five, your effective monthly cost was more than double the advertised figure. Across the grey-market IPTV space this is not a remote hypothetical; it is the base rate. This is the single strongest argument for paying monthly at a higher headline price, and it is why our cost table should be read as a best case rather than an expectation.
What we actually measured: buffering, uptime, guide accuracy
Aggregate scores hide the shape of the failures, so here is the shape. Buffering was not evenly distributed across the day. For all four IPTV services, the 20:00 check was substantially worse than the 08:00 check — our top pick's buffering ratio ran 0.19% in the morning and 0.71% at 20:00, and Beast's went from 1.9% to 6.4%. That is textbook evening congestion, either at the provider's origin or in the intermediate transit, and it means every one of these services is worse than its headline number precisely when you want to use it. Failures also clustered by category. Dead channels were concentrated in international and niche-language sections, while the headline English-language sports and entertainment feeds held up far better than the aggregate verified rate suggests. For our top pick, the verified rate among the 50 channels we would characterise as "the ones people buy this for" was 96%, against 85.2% across the full sample. That is genuinely good news for a typical viewer, and it is also a reminder that our extrapolated verified-library figures overstate how much of the failure lands where you will notice it.
Guide accuracy was the most disappointing dimension across the board. No IPTV service exceeded 92%. Errors skewed toward live sport and toward the two hours after a schedule change, which is the worst possible distribution. The licensed bundles were essentially perfect here — a licensed operator receives programme metadata through a contractual feed, while a grey-market operator scrapes it, and the difference shows up exactly where you would predict.
On resolution honesty: across all four IPTV services we found channels labelled 4K that delivered upscaled 1080p. Our top pick was the least guilty and Beast the worst, but none was clean. We verified by inspecting decoded frame dimensions rather than trusting labels or the player's own readout, and we would encourage anyone comparing services to do the same, because the label is free and the bandwidth is not.
Cheapest by country: USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany
Price and availability are not global, and the cheapest service in one market can be unusable in another. Regional caching matters enormously: a provider with a European origin and no North American edge presence will feel slow in Denver no matter what its advertised specification says. Australia is the market where our latency figures degraded most. Every service we tested added between 1.2 and 3.8 seconds to cold start when accessed from an Australian exit, and the buffering ratios roughly doubled. A note on cross-market price comparison: comparing a US price to a German one at the spot exchange rate is misleading, because what you care about is affordability relative to local income. Adjusting by purchasing power parity shifts the ranking of "cheap" markets substantially, and a service that looks expensive in dollar terms may be the local bargain. World Cup 2026 and the seasonal price trap
The 2026 FIFA World Cup across the United States, Canada, and Mexico expanded to 48 teams and 104 matches, and it did something predictable to this market: every provider in the grey-market tier ran a tournament promotion, and a meaningful number of those promotions were bait. We watched three services in this space advertise short-term tournament plans and then throttle or dead-line customers once the group stage ended. Official broadcast arrangements are listed by FIFA and vary by territory, and the tournament's Wikipedia entry tracks the rights picture reasonably well.
The structural problem with tournament pricing is that a month-long promotion aligns the provider's incentives against yours. They have your money and no renewal to protect, which is the exact configuration under which service quality collapses. During the group stage we recorded our worst buffering figures of the entire 90 days across every IPTV service simultaneously — our top pick hit 1.4% on the busiest match day against its 0.42% average, and Beast peaked above 9%. That is demand exceeding provisioning, and no provider in this tier over-provisions for a peak they see once every four years.
Our advice for a major tournament is unglamorous: buy the licensed option in your territory for the duration if one exists, because a licensed rights holder has contractual obligations about delivery quality that a reseller does not. What cheap looks like on each device
The same subscription is a different product on different hardware, and the spread we measured was large enough to change buying advice. Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the value answer and the device most of these services are built around. Sideloading is straightforward, TiviMate runs natively, and the hardware is cheap enough that the amortised cost barely registers. Its weakness is thermal throttling and long-run memory pressure — across 90 days of continuous operation we saw performance degrade measurably in weeks six through nine, recovering fully after a reboot. Apple TV 4K gave the best playback experience of any device, full stop — fastest tune-in, lowest buffering, no observable degradation over 90 days. It also cannot run TiviMate, which means giving up the best player software available. Whether that trade is worth it depends on how many channels you curate; if your list is short, Apple TV's raw performance wins, and if you are managing hundreds of channels, the player matters more.
Samsung Tizen is the worst option here and we would not recommend buying into this category if a Tizen TV is your only device. Slowest tune-in, no TiviMate, limited player selection, and a platform that constrains what a video app can do with buffering. LG's webOS behaved similarly in spot checks. A $40 stick plugged into the same television fixes all of it.
