Channel zapping is the metric that separates a cable-replacement experience from a compromise. YouTube TV changed channels in 1.9 seconds mean. TiviMate on the IPTV service managed 2.3 seconds with its buffer set to 1200 milliseconds — close enough that nobody in our household complained. We deliberately abused it: 214 scheduled recordings, several with overlapping time slots, several on channels we then removed from our favourites. All 214 were there when we looked. Playback of a recording started in 2.4 seconds mean and supported full scrubbing at any point in the file.
The IPTV service offers catch-up, which is a different and weaker thing. Catch-up windows of seven days were available on 412 of the 13,872 playable channels — about three percent. On those channels it worked well; scrubbing was responsive in TiviMate, and the archive was genuinely complete rather than partially populated. On the other 97 percent of channels, if you did not watch it live, it is gone.
Local recording partially closes the gap. TiviMate Premium and OTT Navigator both record to local storage, and on the Android box with a 256 GB drive attached we recorded 38 hours of content without incident. The time-shifting behaviour differs in a subtler way that took us weeks to notice. YouTube TV lets you rewind a live channel up to the start of the current programme, which means that walking in ten minutes late costs you nothing. Most IPTV players buffer only what they have already downloaded in the current session — typically 30 to 90 seconds — so walking in late means you missed it. IPTV Smarters is the most widely bundled player and the one most providers hand you by default. It works. It is also the slowest of the three at channel changes, its EPG rendering stumbles on large playlists, and it crashed four times in ninety days on the Firestick — always on playlist reload, never during playback. OTT Navigator sits between the two: nearly TiviMate's speed, a denser and more configurable interface, and a steeper learning curve than most households will tolerate.
On Apple TV 4K the situation is worse. Apple's App Store policies keep the best IPTV players out, so Apple TV owners are stuck with a thin selection of general-purpose players that lack recording and handle large playlists poorly. Smart TV apps were the weakest link on both sides. The LG and Samsung IPTV players available through official channels are slow, ugly, and frequently abandoned by their developers. Roku's IPTV situation is similar. YouTube TV, by contrast, ships a first-party app to every one of those platforms and it behaves identically on all of them. Device-by-device results across the rig
The Firestick 4K Max is the device most of our readers own, so we weighted it heavily. On YouTube TV it was flawless but slow to launch — 4.6 seconds cold start against the Apple TV's 3.1. On IPTV with TiviMate it delivered 3.7-second cold starts and 2.6-second zaps, with two app-level crashes across ninety days, both after long idle periods. Thermal throttling appeared after roughly four hours of continuous 4K playback, adding about 0.4 seconds to zap times until the device cooled. Nobody without a stopwatch would notice.
The Apple TV 4K was the best-behaved device in the rig on both services and the most frustrating on one. It gave YouTube TV its best numbers of any hardware we tested. The Windows laptop is not a viewing recommendation but it proved a useful control. Running streams through VLC stripped away every player-side variable and let us confirm that when a stream failed, it had failed at source. In 91 percent of IPTV stall events, VLC on a wired connection failed at the same moment on the same channel. Kemo IPTV finished second and is a reasonable service with a specific weakness: its channel list is well curated and its EPG is above average, but weekend-evening capacity is clearly thinner, and its 9.8 buffer events per 100 hours are concentrated almost entirely in exactly the hours you want to watch football. For a weekday-heavy viewer it is fine. For a Saturday viewer it is not.
Beast IPTV finished third. Broad catalogue, decent 4K feed selection, and the most aggressive marketing claims of the group — a claimed channel count that our parse could not get within 40 percent of.
