A Roku device, for what it is worth, is the one mainstream platform we would actively steer you away from for this use case — the app restrictions are tighter than Apple's.
Windows laptop (VLC, wired). The control. Flawless on every provider, useless as a living-room experience. Its value is diagnostic, as described above.
The bandwidth floor: what your connection actually needs
The marketing answer is "25 Mbps for 4K" and it is close to meaningless for this use case. What matters for a live single-stream event is not peak throughput but sustained throughput with low latency variance, and the number is much lower than most people assume.
Our measurements: a 1080p60 sports feed at the quality these services deliver consumes 6 to 9 Mbps sustained. Add thirty percent headroom for the buffer to refill after any hiccup and you want roughly 12 Mbps of genuinely available bandwidth at the moment of the fight. That is not a demanding requirement. Per the FCC's current broadband definition and the international benchmarks published by the ITU and the OECD, the median fixed connection in most developed markets clears that by a wide margin.
The failures we saw were almost never raw bandwidth. They were contention and variance. A household where somebody starts a large upload during the main card will stall a stream on a 300 Mbps line, because the upstream saturation inflates round-trip time and the TCP acknowledgements that pace your segment downloads get stuck behind it. This is bufferbloat, it is extremely common, and it is fixable: enable smart queue management on your router if it offers it.
